Leaves: Leaves simple or compound (pinnate). Opposite or whorled, sometimes alternate above. Blades often deciduous at anthesis. Margins crenate, serrate, or sometimes entire, often producing adventitious buds. Petiolate or sessile. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in 1–2 terminal cymes. Flowers bisexual (perfect), erect, 4-merous. Calyx of 4 sepals, sometimes inflated, connate into a tube or distinct. Corolla of 4 petals; petals distinct or sometimes connate near base. corolla tubular, constricted above the ovaries. Stamens (4)8; anthers dithecal, opening by longitudinal slits. Ovary superior, carpels 4 (connivent), erect, (nearly distinct); base tapered; styles mostly 2+ times shorter than ovary.

Fruit: Follicles. Seeds minute; endosperm scanty or absent.
